Lore
Coatls are actually not from this world, but from a nearby galaxy. Their planet had only a small desert, a forest that ran on for a couple thousand miles, a few mountains, a supervolcano, and the rest was taken over by huge tropical rainforests, archipelagos, swamps, marshlands, oceans, and beaches.
After many generations had passed, the volcano became more and more active, eventually turning the whole planet into fire, steam, and ash, forcing all Coatls to either flee or perish. Most were able to escape through technology, that has unfortunately been lost with time, and found refuge on planet Earth.
They first landed in the North American jungle and became very fond of the natives that lived there, the ancient Mesoamericans. They worked together in harmony, and Coatls became their trusted companions. Due to their appearance resembling the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, they were dubbed the name "Coatl", which also just means "snake" in Nahuatl. Later on, when the Spaniards conquered the Mesoamerican people, the Coatls, sorrowful and scared, fled once more. This time, however, they ended up living on stray tropical islands where not many humans were found.
After about 100 years of hiding, they became braver and started to expand to islands that contained civilization (Hawaii, Japan, etc.). Some even returned to where their ancestors had first landed. Most Coatls currently inhabit a hidden island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean located in between Mexico and Hawaii they've dubbed "Aztlan".
